CrO2, commonly known as Type II cassette tapes, use Chromium Dioxide as the magnetic material as opposed to Iron Oxide which is used on Type 1 (Normal) tapes.

CrO2 has an advantage in that it can holds stronger magnetic force than Ferric oxide and this means that It can produce a stronger output signal when played giving better signal to noise ratio. The downside is that CrO2 requires more energy to magnetize the tape. This is accomplished by increasing the bias current when the tape is being recorded. Bias current is only a function of recording, not playback, so a CrO2 tape can play back on a machine that cannot record CrO2 tape.
